How it works

This BMI Calculator India page estimates body mass index by using height and weight. BMI is a simple screening metric used to classify body weight into broad categories such as underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity range. It is widely used because it gives a quick directional view of weight status without requiring advanced medical tools. That said, BMI is not a diagnosis, and the result should always be read with context such as waist measurement, activity level, age, body composition, and professional medical advice.

The calculator also shows the healthy weight range for the entered height. This is useful for people who want a practical target zone instead of just a BMI number. The Smart Insights box explains what the result may suggest and reminds users that muscle mass and fat distribution are not measured by BMI. That makes the page useful for early screening, goal setting, and progress tracking, but not as a substitute for medical evaluation.

Formula

BMI = Weight (kg) / [Height (m) x Height (m)]

Example

If weight is 70 kg and height is 170 cm, height in meters is 1.70. BMI becomes 70 / (1.70 x 1.70), which is about 24.2. That falls in the commonly accepted healthy range for adults. If the same person’s weight increases while height remains constant, BMI will move upward and may enter the overweight range. This is why the tool is useful for simple tracking over time.
